About A Rustic Log!

Welcome I am Paul Skelton and I have been working with logs since 1980, I started out in a lumber mill then on to building log cabins and timber framing. But I have always liked to build log furniture.

When I first started A Rustic Log Hand-Crafted Log Furniture I wanted to keep it a hands on small business not a large factory. I am slower than the big company's, but I do try to build what the customer wants. Most of my log furniture is made out of pine from Ontario Canada.

I do all the work myself, so I am a little slow but when you see the finish product, it is worth the wait.

I start by getting the logs from the bush, I carry them out by hand so not to mark the logs. not like a skidder or tractor, plus it does not destroy the forest. I then hand peel the logs with a home made draw knife ( a rear leaf spring from a 79 chev 4x4 ), I do have a store bought draw knife, but it is to lite. Then all nots are ground down, but not to smooth I like to keep the natural look. Then I let logs air dry outdoors, then bring them in out of the weather. Then I am about ready to cut to size, build and sand. I select each log to match and fit exact, this is a very slow process.

I only have a small shop, approx. size is 24' wide x 30' long, hot in summer and cold in the winter.
